The theme for the new rugby league season is ‘Unreal’, with Nathan Cleary, James Tedesco, Daly Cherry-Evans, Josh Addo-Carr and Jess Sergis among the stars selling the slogan in the NRL’s new advertising campaign.
This is the first look at the new ‘It’s all real that makes rugby league so unreal’ advert, which promotes all levels of the game, from grassroots football to women’s competition and the NRL .
Benji Marshall may be retired, but the legendary playmaker is paid tribute in a 60-second clip that also gives airtime to some of the stars of today and tomorrow.
Fittingly given his heroics from last season, the ad opens with the Manly superstar scoring a signature try as Nine commentator Ray Warren gasps: “Unreal, where did that come from?”
The action sets the stage for the rest of the promotion, who then move on to Avalon Junior Axel Wolthers, 10, taking down a taller opponent.
Canterbury rookie Josh Addo-Carr recreates St Kilda great Nicky Winmar’s famous shirt-lifting gesture as the action switches from NRL to NRLW to grassroots action. There’s a tribute to Penrith’s final big triumph, with Ivan and Nathan Cleary taking part in the campaign shoot.
“The theme of our marketing for the 2022 season is to celebrate all the authentic and real moments that exist in rugby league. From junior participation to grand final glory,” said NRL CEO Andrew Abdo.
“Our players, the communities they represent, the adversity our clubs and athletes face and, above all, the authenticity of our fans. Our game is truly real and that’s what makes rugby league unreal.
